Contractor insurance in Winston-Salem, NC
If your business builds, repairs or maintains property in Forsyth County, builders and property managers will ask for proof of insurance before they let you work. At our Winston-Salem office, at 2120 Old Lexington Road, we insure contractors in English and Spanish: we put together general liability, workers' comp, commercial auto and tools coverage for your trade, and issue the certificates your contracts require. We're an independent agency and compare several companies instead of selling you just one. We don't compete on price promises; we compete on clear explanations and service that responds.
The coverage contractors usually need
- General liability: damage to a client's property or injuries to others caused by your work, with the limits your contract requires.
- Workers' compensation: medical care and part of lost wages for your employees if they're hurt on the job.
- Commercial auto: your work trucks, vans and trailers; a personal policy doesn't cover business use.
- Tools and equipment (inland marine): what you carry in the truck and leave on the job site.
- Commercial umbrella: an extra layer when a contract asks for higher limits than your policy.
- Certificates of insurance: with additional insured and waiver of subrogation when the contract requires them.
What North Carolina requires for workers' comp
According to the North Carolina Industrial Commission, an employer with three or more employees generally must carry workers' comp. In a corporation, executive officers count as employees: two officers and one employee already make three. If any employee works with radiation, coverage is required no matter how many employees you have.
Contractors have one key rule: under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 97-19, if you sublet work without first getting the subcontractor's workers' comp certificate, you can be held responsible for injuries to that subcontractor's employees as if they were your own. Get the certificate before the work starts. Read more in our guide Does my business need workers' comp?

Frequently asked questions
Do I need workers' comp if I have fewer than three employees?
The law generally requires it with three or more employees, counting a corporation's officers. Even when the law doesn't require it, many builders ask for a workers' comp certificate before letting you work. We'll review your situation with you.
Can I get insurance with an ITIN or a matrícula consular?
Yes. We work with clients who have an ITIN or a matrícula consular. Tell us what ID you have and a licensed agent will explain your options.
What is a certificate of insurance (COI)?
It's a document that shows you're insured, with your coverages and limits. Builders and property managers ask for it before a job starts. You can request one in our Client Center.
What do additional insured and waiver of subrogation mean?
Additional insured adds the builder or project owner as an insured on your general liability policy for claims arising from your work. Waiver of subrogation means your insurance company gives up the right to recover from that party what it pays on a claim. Many contracts require both.
Does my personal truck cover me if I use it for work?
No. A personal policy doesn't cover business use. If your truck carries tools, materials or your crew, you need commercial auto.
Does general liability cover my tools?
No. General liability covers damage to other people and their property. For your tools and equipment you need inland marine coverage, which we can add to your account.
Can you help me in Spanish?
Yes. We explain your policy, your certificates and your contract requirements in English or Spanish, at the office at 2120 Old Lexington Road or by phone at 336.793.1505.
