What should you do after a car accident? A step-by-step checklist
An accident is stressful, and it's easy to forget something important. Save this list on your phone.
At the scene
- Check for injuries and get safe. If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 911 first. If it's safe, turn on your hazard lights and move out of traffic.
- Call the police if anyone is injured, if there's significant damage, or if the other driver won't cooperate. Ask for the report number.
- Exchange information: name, phone, insurance company and policy number, driver's license and license plate of every driver involved.
- Take photos: all vehicles from several angles, the plates, the road, traffic signs, and any injuries.
- Talk to witnesses and write down their names and phone numbers.
- Stick to the facts. Describe what happened without guessing about who was at fault.
After you leave the scene
- Report the claim to your insurance company as soon as you can. Most claims lines answer 24/7. Our Client Center has each company's claims number and online claim link.
- Get medical attention if you feel any pain, even if it seems minor.
- Keep everything: the claim number, receipts for towing, rental car or medical bills, and every letter from the insurance companies.
- Call us during office hours. We'll help you follow up with the insurance company and understand what your policy covers.
