Workers' comp that covers your crew and keeps your contracts moving

A supervisor and a worker reviewing a job site

If someone on your team gets hurt on the job, workers' compensation pays for their medical care and part of the wages they lose, and it includes employer's liability coverage if your business is sued over the injury. For contractors, it is also the certificate general contractors ask for before you start. We help North Carolina businesses set up the right policy and explain it in English or Spanish.

What does a workers' comp policy cover?

  • Medical care for work-related injuries and illnesses
  • Part of the wages an injured employee loses while recovering
  • Benefits for the employee's family if a work injury is fatal
  • Employer's liability coverage if your business is sued over a workplace injury

Who has to carry it in North Carolina?

  • Most employers with three or more employees, according to the NC Industrial Commission
  • Corporate officers count toward that number: two officers and one employee already means coverage is required
  • Any employer whose work involves radiation, no matter how many employees it has
  • Contractors: if you sublet work without first getting the subcontractor's workers' comp certificate, you can be held responsible for their injured employees, even if they have fewer than three (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 97-19)

What should you have ready for a quote?

  • Your business's legal name, FEIN and the states where you work
  • What each employee does, so the work is classified correctly
  • Estimated annual payroll for each type of work
  • Whether you use subcontractors, and whether they carry their own coverage
  • Your claims history for the last 3 to 5 years, if you have it

Business owner with an ITIN or a matrícula consular?

  • We insure business owners who have an ITIN or a matrícula consular
  • Tell us how your business is set up when you ask for a quote, and a licensed agent will explain your options
  • Everything explained in Spanish or English

The rules have exceptions and every business is different. A licensed agent will review your situation and confirm what applies to you. The official source for the law is the NC Industrial Commission (ic.nc.gov).
