In North Carolina, every registered vehicle must carry liability insurance, with no gaps. A full policy usually combines four parts:
- Liability: pays for injuries and damage you cause to other people. For policies issued or renewed since July 1, 2025, the minimum is $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries, and $50,000 for property damage (50/100/50).
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM): now has to be on every new or renewed policy, at least at the new limits. It protects you when the driver who hits you has no insurance or too little.
- Collision: repairs your own car after a crash, no matter who was at fault, minus your deductible.
- Comprehensive: covers theft, vandalism, hail, flooding or hitting a deer on a rural road.
